Important announcement

Outpatient Clinic Relocation

The Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery is undergoing exciting new changes to provide exceptional services and care for patients. In November 2008, the program's outpatient clinic will relocate to an expanded, state-of-the-art facility, located at Durham Regional Hospital's Health Services Center.

In preparation for the move and grand opening, we will not be holding the weekly weight loss surgery information seminars. Seminars will resume in November 2008. Thank you for your patience.

Additionally, Durham Regional has updated its operating rooms and added six bariatric inpatient suites, designed to meet the needs of weight loss surgery patients.

Clinical Facility:

The Weight Loss Surgery Clinic is currently located in the Duke University Health Systems North Duke Street Building, a recently renovated space at 3116 North Duke Street, just north of Durham Regional Hospital. An entire section of this building is dedicated to your care.

There is ample free parking just outside the building and there is a covered driveway in front of the main entrance. In addition to a properly appointed waiting room, the clinic has specially equipped examination rooms, a large conference room for group sessions, a radiology suite, and a clinical laboratory facility.

This is the entry to our Clinic. A drive-through drop off area facilitates entry during inclement weather. Parking is ample and at no charge.

Our waiting room has oversized chairs for your comfort.

Clinic Intake Area. Our clinic nurse, Melita Nelson, will take your vital signs, weigh you, and measure your height. In addition, she will determine your body composition (total body fat, total body water, and lean body mass) and take a baseline picture for future reference.

One of our nurse clinicians, Hilary Blackwood, Karen McCain, or Deborah Underwood, will record your medical history and perform a physical examination. Your laboratory studies will be reviewed and arrangements made for any further studies necessary.

You will have a visit with our Dietitian, Patrick Mahaney, with a review of your dietary habits and discussion of how to begin your preparation for a new life.

You will meet with one of our psychologists, Katherine Applegate or Kelli Friedman, to help maximize your success with weight loss surgery.

Our educational conference room is where you will meet as a group for pre- and postoperative discussions with our staff.
