TRANSFER PREVIEW FOR SUMMER/FALL 2008 ENROLLMENT
If you haven’t already, be sure to complete our online component of orientation before making a reservation to attend the on-campus Transfer PREVIEW, but please read the important information below carefully before clicking on the on-line reservation link on this webpage. Feel free to visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page to receive a wealth of information.
WELCOME!
Congratulations on your admission to Old Dominion University. We know that you are looking forward to your first semester with great anticipation, and yet, have many questions. PREVIEW, the University’s undergraduate orientation program, will provide useful information, and personalized assistance as you begin your transition to Old Dominion and college life.
PREVIEW Requirements
Transfer PREVIEW is for undergraduate students transferring in 24 or more credit hours from another institution.
If you are entering Old Dominion University in the summer and/or fall semester as a new freshman student or as a freshman-level transfer student (with less than 24 credit hours), then you are required to attend Freshman PREVIEW. If you are enrolling in the spring semester (January–May), then click on Midyear PREVIEW for accurate details about our spring orientation program.
All Business majors are required to attend PREVIEW. (See the Business Majors section on this page.) Non-Business majors, transferring in 24 or more credit hours are not required, but are strongly encouraged to attend Transfer PREVIEW. All transfer students would benefit from completing the On-line Component of Orientation regardless of attending PREVIEW.
PREVIEW Highlights
* Advising & registration for summer and/or fall classes
* Student ID Card
* Informational sessions for parents & guests
* Academic planning & resource material
* University services & facilities
* Campus tour
Open House
Open House programs are sponsored by the Admissions Office and should not be confused with Orientation/PREVIEW. An “Open House” is a general information session about the University for prospective students whereas Orientation/PREVIEW is a more in-depth learning opportunity for admitted students.
Family Connection: A Special Invitation
We recognize that family and guests play an important role in college success, and we invite adult family and guests to attend orientation as well. PREVIEW for family and guests runs separately and concurrently with the student program and features informational sessions, meetings with administrators and faculty, and an introduction to services especially designed for family members of Old Dominion students. A tentative student and parent/guest schedule will be included in the PREVIEW confirmation packet. (See the PREVIEW Cancellation and Refund Policy on this page.)
Parents are also invited to join the University’s Parents’ Association in order to maintain that Family Connection with Old Dominion University. This organization allows parents to become more acquainted with Old Dominion University and all that it has to offer, along with giving parents a voice. If your parents are interested in receiving more information about the Parents’ Association and wish to learn more about the University, be sure to enter your parents’ e-mail addresses on the PREVIEW reservation form. Further details about the Parents’ Association will be provided during the orientation program.
Infants and Younger Children
Since PREVIEW is designed for college students and adults, it is suggested that infants and younger children not attend PREVIEW, as daycare services are not provided.
PREVIEW Dates for Fall 2008 Enrollment
PREVIEW dates are handled on a first-come, first-served basis; therefore, no exceptions can be made for a PREVIEW date that is filled to capacity.
Friday, June 6 (reservation deadline: Friday May 30)
Wednesday, June 25 (reservation deadline: Wednesday, June 18)
Monday, July 14 (reservation deadline: Monday, July 7)

The orientation program begins with check-in at 9:15 a.m. in the front lobby of the Mills Godwin Building, and ends at approximately 5:00 p.m. You are expected to attend all sessions. Please keep this in mind as you make travel arrangements. Again, we can make no exceptions to the dates that are already closed/filled to capacity. You will be able to see how many seats are available in each date when you make your on-line reservation. Any necessary hotel reservations should be made accordingly.

PREVIEW Fees
Student Fee: $45
Parent/Guest Fee: $25 per person
The fee covers the cost of refreshments and lunch, peer PREVIEW Counselor staff, support services and resource materials. The PREVIEW fee is not covered by scholarships or financial aid.
Note: To make an on-line reservation, you must pay the PREVIEW fee using a card with a Visa or MasterCard logo. To pay by check/money order, contact the Office of Orientation/PREVIEW, preview@odu.edu or (757) 683-3428, to request the hard copy version of the brochure and reservation form to be sent to you. The completed reservation form must be submitted with the PREVIEW fee (check/money order made payable to Old Dominion University) in order for the reservation and date assignment to be confirmed. A PREVIEW confirmation will be provided upon completion of the reservation process.
Placement Tests & Assessments
Placement tests and assessments are not offered during the Orientation/PREVIEW program. All testing and assessments are available on-line through Blackboard. Further instructions will be included in your PREVIEW Confirmation Packet. You must activate your MIDAS ID and student email account in order to login to Blackboard - please allow 2 business days for your Blackboard and placement test access to be updated before you attempt to login to Blackboard. If you register for Orientation/PREVIEW on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, please wait until the following Tuesday before you attempt to login to Blackboard. If you do not plan to attend an on-campus Orientation/PREVIEW, you must complete the on-line Transfer student orientation in order to login to Blackboard. You must take your placement tests and assessments before orientation and they must be completed no later than 12 noon two weeks prior to your orientation date. Do not wait until the last minute! You will receive an e-mail reminder about this process. E-mail placementtesting@odu.edu if you have any questions. Please include your full name, UIN, and PREVIEW date in your e-mail.
If the time that you make your PREVIEW reservation does not allot you enough time to take the Writing Test by the testing deadline, then, at PREVIEW, you will receive further instructions on when to take the test. Again, the test will not be available during the orientation program.
ON-LINE TESTING & ASSESSMENT
All entering undergraduate students, with or without transfer credit for freshman composition, must take and pass Old Dominion University’s Writing Sample Placement Test (WSPT) on-line via Blackboard. All entering undergraduate students, including students with transfer credit (e.g. AP, IB, Dual Enrollment credit from secondary school or course equivalent from another post-secondary institution) for ENGL 110C (first-year composition) must complete and pass the WSPT. This 90-minute essay test evaluates the writing abilities of all incoming students. The Writing Center webpage can provide you with further details.
Transfer students are required to complete the Transfer Student Assessment, which consists of two parts: the Transfer Student Survey (TSS) and the Biographical Questionnaire (BioQ).
The TSS must be completed on-line via Blackboard before your orientation date. The second part of the Transfer Student Assessment (BioQ) must be completed during the initial, entering semester for all undergraduate transfer students, prior to pre-registration for the following semester.
MATH PLACEMENT
All incoming transfer students are eligible to enroll in MATH 101M Math for Critical Thinking or MATH 102M College Algebra. Those transfer studentss who come with no Math credits, but who seek higher placement than MATH 101M ro MATH 102M, must submit either an SAT score or an ACT score or they must agree to take the COMPASS Placement Test. Appropriate scores on one of these tests will place the student into either STAT 130M Statistics, or MATH 162M PreCalculus I, or MATH 163 PreCalculus II, or MATH 211 Calculus I.
Students can challenge their math placement and/or seek academic credit by making an appointment to take the COMPASS placement test at the University Testing Center. For more information or to schedule to take the COMPASS, contact the Testing Center (757) 683-3697 or visit the Testing Center webpage.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE ACHIEVEMENT TEST
All students who have studied a foreign language in high school for three or more years who wish to continue in that same language must take the Foreign Language Achievement Test. Students with fewer than 3 years of foreign language study in high school may take the test if they wish; otherwise, they must begin with the 101F course. Foreign Language courses below the 300-level are not open to native speakers. Students who need to take the Foreign Language Achievement Test should contact the Testing Center (757) 683-3697, to schedule an appointment to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test on campus. There is a $20 fee (subject to change) for this test.
TESTING DISABILITY
Students who need special accommodations due to a documented disability must contact the Office of Disability Services before taking the placement tests. (See the Disability Services section.) Accommodations cannot be provided without advance notice. E-mail disabilityservices@odu.edu or call (757) 683-4655.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
International and permanent resident students needing to take the TOEFL may contact the English Language Center for registration information, elc@odu.edu or 757-683-4424. The TOEFL must be taken and results must be posted before making a PREVIEW reservation.
Students with Transfer Credit
While on campus during PREVIEW, you have the opportunity to meet with Admissions staff to discuss your transfer credits. Official transcripts are necessary for a final evaluation. An official transcript from all institutions and official test scores for which you are seeking credit must be submitted to the Admissions Office. It is important that you bring your transfer credit evaluation with you to PREVIEW so that your advisor can review it with you during the advising and registration sessions. To obtain your degree evaluation on-line, visit the University Registrar – Degree Evaluation webpage and follow the instructions to run a degree evaluation. E-mail degreeaudit@odu.edu if you have any questions or need further information. A reminder of this assignment will be included in your PREVIEW Confirmation Packet.
Transfer Students Who Choose Not to Attend PREVIEW
PREVIEW provides all of the necessary activities in one convenient stop; however, students (non-Business majors) who transfer in 24 more credit hours to Old Dominion University are not required to attend. If you are a non-Business major and choose not to attend PREVIEW, it will be your responsibility to (a) retrieve and print your degree transfer credit evaluation, (b) take the required placement tests and assessment, (c) beginning mid-April, contact and make an appointment with the advisor of your intended major so that you may register for classes, (c) after course registration, get your ODU student ID card, and (e) find out what other information is valuable to you by visiting campus offices. Attending PREVIEW, a one-stop shop, is the best and most convenient route to take. The on-line component of orientation is very helpful to those who choose not to attend PREVIEW.
ALL Business majors are required to attend PREVIEW.
Overnight Accommodation
A hotel list will be included in the PREVIEW Confirmation packet for PREVIEW participants (students and parents/guests) needing overnight accommodations.
Dining Services
Refreshments and lunch are provided for all PREVIEW participants.
PREVIEW Date Change Policy
Please select your PREVIEW date choice carefully. By making your reservation on-line, you have easy access to revisit your reservation to change your date immediately by clicking on Go: Review Your Reservation, then click on Student Log-in, or you may call the Orientation/PREVIEW Office, (757) 683-3428. PREVIEW dates are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you change your PREVIEW date, your original date selection will immediately be available to someone else.
PREVIEW Cancellation and Refund Policy
Note: All Business majors are required to attend PREVIEW. Freshmen and freshman-level transfer students are required to attend Freshman PREVIEW.
Please notify the PREVIEW Office in writing if you must cancel your PREVIEW reservation or a reservation for your parent/guest. Credit cards are not automatically credited if someone is removed from your reservation. Cancellation and refund requests for any PREVIEW participant will be approved only if received in writing no later than three (3) days prior to the selected PREVIEW date. Requests may be submitted via e-mail, fax or the U.S. Postal Service. No partial refunds are provided.
Please keep in mind that we are currently unable to refund by crediting cards. Due to this current status, the paperwork for granted refund requests will be immediately prepared and forwarded to our Accounts Payable Office for processing so that a check will be issued. Please allow 4-6 weeks to receive the refund.
Attending PREVIEW with Another Incoming Student?
If you plan to attend the same PREVIEW as a friend, submit your reservations as close to the same time as possible. The Orientation/PREVIEW Office cannot guarantee a date until the reservation process is complete.
Your E-mail Address (IMPORTANT!)
Your e-mail address is required on your PREVIEW reservation as a means of communication with the Orientation/PREVIEW Office. Only information related to Old Dominion University’s undergraduate orientation program, such as important PREVIEW reminders, would be sent to you via the e-mail address you provide. Please be sure that your e-mail address is active and accurate before submission. Enter the e-mail address that you are most comfortable with using, such as your personal e-mail address rather than your new University e-mail address. We ask that you check your e-mail regularly upon completion of making your PREVIEW reservation. If you have an automated reply, allowing messages only from senders you have approved beforehand in order to control spam, then be sure to add preview@odu.edu as one of your approved e-mail addresses before making a reservation.
PLEASE CHECK THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO SEE IF IT PERTAINS TO YOU
Business Majors
The College of Business and Public Administration (CBPA) requires all Business majors who plan to attend any of the sites in the Hampton Roads area (freshmen and transfers) to attend Orientation/PREVIEW regardless of the number of credits transferred. New matriculating students who had previously attended ODU as a non-degree seeking student are also required to attend PREVIEW despite their earlier student status. If you will only be taking courses at a local Hampton Roads site other than the main campus (Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, Peninsula Higher Education Center or Tri-Cities Higher Education Center), please submit an update request at the Advising Inquiry for Undergraduate Business Majors/Minors webpage, so that your site code can be correctly identified as soon as possible. Students who are planning to attend a site outside Hampton Roads should contact the director of the site they wish to attend. (See the Distance Learning/TELETECHNET section.) For more information, contact the CPBA Office at (757) 683-5777 or visit the Advising Inquiry for Undergraduate Business Majors/Minors webpage above.
Is Your Native Language English?
If your answer is NO, then have you satisfied the University’s English proficiency requirement? If you have not satisfied this requirement, then before you make a PREVIEW reservation, you must first submit proof of English proficiency to the International Admissions Office or contact the English Language Center at ODU to sign up for the Institutional Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). After International Admissions verifies you have a sufficient test score, an update will be made and you will be able to attend PREVIEW.
Disability Services
Students, parents, guardians or guests with special needs who desire interpreters or other accommodations must contact the Office of Disability Services, (757) 683-4655 two weeks prior to their scheduled PREVIEW date. Wheelchairs are not available for use.
Distance Learning/TELETECHNET Students
TELETECHNET students are encouraged to attend Student Orientation at the distant site, which is broadcast from Norfolk several days prior to the fall term. Following the broadcasted portion, sites typically offer their own Orientation so that students can become familiar with site-specific policies and procedures. TELETECHNET students do not attend PREVIEW on ODU’s main campus. Visit the Distance Learning webpage; contact their local site director, or call the Office of Distance Learning, (800) 968-2638, for more information.

BEFORE You Make Your PREVIEW Reservation
get your Uin & Midas id and ACTIVATE YOUR MIDAS ID AND STUDENT E-MAIL ADDRESS:
You will use your University Identification Number (UIN), not your Social Security Number, and birth date (MM/DD/YYYY), not your PIN, to make your PREVIEW reservation. The UIN replaces your Social Security Number as the primary identification number at Old Dominion University. The UIN is a unique, 8-digit number that is considered personally identifiable information and is protected in the same manner as your Social Security Number. Please note that the University is still required by law to collect your SSN for financial aid and tax reporting purposes. You can obtain your UIN by following the steps below:
1. Go to Leo Online, www.leoonline.odu.edu, and click on Enter Leo Online News and Secure Area.
2. Scroll down, click on the key to Enter Secure Area. Carefully read and follow the on-line instructions.
3. Initially enter your 9-digit Social Security Number as your User ID, and your 6-digit date of birth (MMDDYY) as your PIN. You may be prompted to change your PIN as a security measure (first time only).
4. Agree to the terms of use.
5. Click on Personal Information, and then click on View University and MIDAS Identification Numbers.
6. Write down your UIN and MIDAS ID for future reference.
You must activate your MIDAS ID. Go to https://midas.odu.edu and click on Activate MIDAS ID. You will enter your UIN and Leo Online password or your full name, UIN, date of birth, and gender to validate your identity and activate your MIDAS ID. After you activate your MIDAS ID, you must also make sure your student email account is active in order to access placement testing on-line via the PREVIEW site on Blackboard. Please allow 24 hours for your Blackboard access to be updated before you attempt to login to Blackboard.
To activate your student email account:
1. Log in to MIDAS at https://midas.odu.edu using your MIDAS ID and password.
2. Click on My Services.
3. Under Service Name, look for Student E-mail.
4. Check to make sure the Status of your student email is Active.
5. If your student email is inactive, scroll down the page until you see “you are eligible for the following additional services” – if your student email is on this list, click Activate.
6. To verify that your student email account has been activated, go to http://season.odu.edu and login using your MIDAS ID and password. Please allow 2 hours for your student email account to become active.
7. Write down your e-mail address for future reference.
8. To protect your privacy, select Exit and close your browser when you have completed access to this system.
Again, be sure that you have followed the procedure to obtain your UIN, MIDAS ID, and University E-mail Address before making your reservation. Be sure to write them down for future reference.
