Freshman Students:  As an incoming freshman, you are not required to take the Math Placement Test.  Your SAT score (or ACT score if you did not take the SAT) will determine your math placement.  If you wish to challenge your math placement based on your SAT or ACT score OR receive credit for mathematics, then you may contact the Testing Center to schedule to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test.  If you have transferable college math credit (Math for Critical Thinking, Statistics, College Algebra, PreCalculus or Calculus), then you are not required to take the Math Placement Test.

Institutional credit for MATH 162M and 163M may be awarded with qualifying scores on the COMPASS Math Placement Test. You can visit this math help site
http://www.purplemath.com prior to taking the COMPASS test.

Contact the Office of Experiential Learning (Testing Center), 757-683-3697, for further assistance.

Transfer Students:  If you do not have transferable math credit or have not met the math requirements for your major, then you will need to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test.  If you have transferable college math credit (Math for Critical Thinking, Statistics, College Algebra, PreCalculus, Calculus), then you are not required to take the Math Placement Test.

Contact the Office of Experiential Learning (Testing Center) at (757) 683-3697 or http://uc.odu.edu/elt/ to schedule an appointment to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test.

The Computerized Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) is a 90-minute, multiple-choice test designed to assess fundamental knowledge of mathematical concepts.

You can earn credit for required math courses by getting high scores on either tests. Students receiving low scores on the COMPASS test will be placed in developmental math courses. Upon passing the course, students can then enroll in MATH 101M, 102M, 162M or STAT 130M.

Calculators are not permitted during testing.
