  3. You may not have, but need, Cookies enabled on your computer. Cookies are pieces of information generated by a Web server and stored in the user's computer, ready for future access. Visit the CookieCentral.com for more information. If the problem continues, try using a computer on a different server.

  4. There may be a discrepancy with your Admissions information, such as a simple error in data entry. Contact the Orientation/PREVIEW Office, 757-683-3428 so that your records can be checked for accuracy.

ADMISSIONS DEPOSIT and/or FINANCIAL AID
Can I reserve PREVIEW if I haven't yet submitted the Admissions Deposit or Financial Aid paperwork? Yes, you may reserve PREVIEW upon full acceptance to Old Dominion University. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) CREDIT & PLACEMENT TESTS
I took the AP exam for math while in high school. Do I still need to take the Math Placement Test? As an incoming freshman, you are not required to take the Math Placement Test. Your SAT score (or ACT score if you did not take the SAT) will determine your math placement. If you wish to challenge your placement in math based on your SAT or ACT score, then you may contact the Testing Center to schedule to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test. If you have questions or need further information about AP credit or the Math Test, contact the Testing Center (757-683-3697), or visit the Testing Center web page for more information.

Transfer Students: If you do not have transferable math credit or have not met the math requirement for your major, then you will need to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test. .
-Back to top-
ADVANCED PLACEMENT CREDIT & DUAL ENROLLMENT

-Back to top-
ADVISING HOLD
I have an Advisor Registration Block/Hold on my record. How do I get this removed? Your academic advisor will remove the advising hold on your record when s/he has approved your schedule during PREVIEW. Your advisor hold will be lifted following your advising session. For more information about “holds” or “blocks”, visit the Registration Holds web page.

ATTEND PREVIEW WITH ANOTHER NEW STUDENT
I plan to attend the same PREVIEW as a friend. What should we do? PREVIEW reservations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are reserving PREVIEW on-line, be sure to follow the reservation process at or near the same time. Those who choose not to make an on-line reservation should submit the reservations simultaneously via the U.S. Postal Service or in person. The Orientation/PREVIEW Office cannot guarantee a date until the reservation is complete.

CANNOT ATTEND PREVIEW
I have other obligations that conflict with the PREVIEW dates. What are my options? PREVIEW should be a priority if you are an incoming freshman since the University requires it. For your convenience, several PREVIEW dates are offered from which to choose. Contact the Orientation/PREVIEW Office, preview@odu.edu or 757-683-3428, if you have any further questions. You also have the option to defer your admission to the next semester.

PREVIEW is not required, but highly recommended for (non-business major) transfer students with 24+ credit hours. If you're a non-business major transfer student who chooses not to attend PREVIEW, then it will be your responsibility to....
  • make an appointment to take the required placement tests;
  • obtain a copy of your transfer credits via the Degree Evaluation system for your advising appointment;
  • during Open Registration (mid-April or mid-November, see the Academic Calendar), make an appointment to get advised so that you may register;
  • after registration, get your ODU student ID; and,
  • find out what other information is valuable to you by contacting campus offices.
So, as you can see, attending PREVIEW is the best route to take! Remember: Freshmen and all Business majors are required to attend PREVIEW.

If parents/guardians would like to join the Family Connection and be kept informed of relevant University events, announcements, and valuable parent information, they are encouraged to provide their e-mail address(es) on your PREVIEW reservation in order to be added to the list of recipients.

PARENTS/GUESTS ATTENDING PREVIEW
Should parents/guests attend PREVIEW? We believe that family and guests play an important role in college success and we invite adult family members and guests to attend orientation as well, but it is not a requirement. PREVIEW for family and guests runs separately and concurrently with the student program and features informational sessions, meetings with administrators and faculty, and an introduction to services especially designed for family members of Old Dominion students. Since PREVIEW is designed for high school graduates and adults, it is suggested that infants and younger children not attend PREVIEW, as day care services are not provided.

PARENTS/GUESTS IN ADVISING/REGISTRATION SESSION
Will my parents be able to assist me with course registration during PREVIEW? Parents/guests do not participate in the course selection process. The departmental advisor of your intended major will assist you with course selection to ensure that you receive the correct courses to fulfill the degree requirements according to your major and placement test results, and provide you with contact information for future communication after PREVIEW. PREVIEW Counselors (current students) will also assist you with the course registration process.

Old Dominion University complies with the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA guarantees students certain rights with respect to their education records. Visit the University Registrar: Privacy of Information web page for further details.

Be sure to retain the advisor's contact information. If your parent/guest has questions or wishes to meet with your assigned advisor, you may contact the advisor some time after your PREVIEW date to make a family appointment. The line of communication with your family depends on you.

SATS & PLACEMENT TESTS
I took the SAT or ACT. As an incoming freshman, do I still need to take the Writing and Math tests?

All incoming, degree-seeking, undergraduate students are required to take ODU's Writing Sample Placement Test regardless of any tests taken prior to their acceptance to the University.

Freshman Students: Your SAT score (or ACT score if you did not take the SAT) will determine your Math Placement. If you wish to challenge your placement in math based on your SAT or ACT score, then you may contact the Testing Center to schedule to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test. If you have transferable college math credit (Math for Critical Thinking, Statistics, College Algebra, PreCalculus or Calculus), then you are not required to take the Math Placement Test.

Transfer Students: If you do not have transferable math credit or have not met the math requirement for your major, then you will need to take the COMPASS Math Placement Test.

If you're intended major falls under the College of Business, then you are required to attend the Transfer PREVIEW to meet with the advisor and register for courses.
-Back to top-
SPECIAL EDUCATION MAJOR
I wish to major in Special Education, but it's not on the Major list. What should I do? The University only offers a minor in Special Education on the undergraduate level; therefore, students have the option of selecting either the Elementary Education program or a Secondary education major (i.e.: Mathematics, History, English, etc.).

The nice thing about the Early Childhood Track (PK-3rd grade) offered through the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) department is that the major has a built-in minor in Special Education that is already part of the program. For the other majors, Elementary Education (PK-6th grade in IDS) or one of the Secondary Education tracks (in either the College of Science or Arts and Letters), the students have to add the minor in Special Education in order to go on for the graduate program in Special Education.

A student is expected to write a 400/500-word expository essay in response to one of two “should”, “would”, or “could” questions derived from three topic areas: Basic Human Rights, Television, and Education. The essay should have an introduction, a body of paragraphs supporting the thesis statement, and a conclusion. The WSPT is offered at all orientation programs. Visit the Writing Center: Tips and Guidelines web page for more information.

Transfer students who have not fulfilled their Math requirement must take the University’s Math COMPASS Test to determine course placement. This computer-adaptive assessment for Math starts all students in College Algebra and then adapts to an individual’s mathematics skill level. This un-timed test, which takes approximately 45 minutes, is used to determine minimum competency required to succeed in Math courses. Students needing to take the Math test may contact the Testing Center, 757-683-3697, to schedule to take the test. For sample math questions, visit both the Math Numerical Skills/Pre-Algebra and College Algebra/Geometry/Trigonometry web pages for sample questions and more information. Feel free to visit the Testing Center for more information.
