Preview Counselor Job Description

PREVIEW Counselors are involved with virtually every aspect of Old Dominion's orientation program for new students and their parents. The position requires broad knowledge of and dedication to Old Dominion University, an ability to communicate and relate well with all people, patience, common sense, enthusiasm, personal warmth, and the capability to evaluate objectively and react positively in various situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be an Old Dominion University student who will be enrolling in undergraduate level courses spring semester 2008 and fall semester 2008.

Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA): 2.50 (2.75 is preferred)

Note to freshman applicants: You must have a minimum GPA of 2.50 at the end of fall semester and this GPA must be maintained at the end of the spring semester in order to assume the position.

Academic record must be free of any active judicial sanctions.

Compensation Benefits

First-Time PCs: Amount TBA. The compensation covers a 5-day Training Week, fifteen 1-day Freshman PREVIEWs; seven 1-day Transfer/Adult PREVIEWs, three 1-day Midyear PREVIEWs, 3-day preparation for final summer programs, and the 2-day Old Dominion DEBUT. The number of orientation dates are subject to change.

Room: A furnished room will be provided in the residence hall. This room will also be available for Training Week. The rooms include a refrigerator and mircowave for PREVIEW Counselors.

Meals : Meals will be provided only when Training Week and PREVIEW are in session. At other times PREVIEW Counselors assume their own meal costs.

Specific Job Expectations

**All PREVIEW Counselors must be committed to the principles of academic excellence and integrity. As such, each Counselor is expected to have and to maintain no less than a 2.50 GPA. PREVIEW Counselors are further encouraged to have a 2.75 or greater GPA.

**The I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form, Drug & Alchol Notification/Child Care Support Disclosure Form, Selective Service Compliance Form (if you're male), Internet Services Form, Automated Direct Deposit Form, and Tax Forms must be completed and submitted to the Student Payroll Office in order to be eligible for employment on campus. Forms may be obtained in Rollins Hall.

**Each PREVIEW Counselor must be supportive and actively committed to the mission and purpose of Old Dominion University including marketing of the institution in an highly positive manner.

**Attend and successfully complete the two hour peer counseling seminar course required of all PREVIEW Counselors. This course will be taught in the spring semester.

**Successfully complete a one week training session held near the end of June prior to the start of PREVIEW; participate in the Mid-Year and Spring PREVIEW programs, the summer Freshman and Transfer programs, DEBUT in late August, as well as other public relations events; attend all staff meetings. PREVIEW Counselors are also required to assist with the preparations as well as the execution of DEBUT.

**Be knowledgeable of facilities, services and programs on campus and possess the ability to communicate this information to new students and parents.

**Assist with the preparation of materials distributed during PREVIEW.

**Be visible and available to all PREVIEW participants and maintain standards of personal conduct and dress that serve as a good example of PREVIEW participants.

**Attempt to prevent crisis and problem situations before they develop; keep the senior PREVIEW Counselor informed of these problems and if necessary promptly report concerns and problems to appropriate university officials.

**Assist Academic Advisors with course scheduling, testing and registration procedures during PREVIEW.

**Support and emulate the university's commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity.

**Perform other duties as delegated by the Director of PREVIEW, Orientation Secretary or Senior PREVIEW Counselor.

**Reside in university residence hall during training and PREVIEW with specific responsibilities as follows: a. Support and enforce university and housing policies and regulations. b. Assist the residence directors in maintaining residence hall control and serve as a resident assistant while PREVIEW students are in residence. c. Make PREVIEW participants aware of security procedures and precautions.

**Serve at the Freshman PREVIEWs (from June to August), Transfer/Adult PREVIEWs (tentatively scheduled from April through August), and MidYear PREVIEWs (December and January). It should be noted that the number and type of PREVIEWs mentioned herein may be subject to change depending upon need. However, regardless of any change, all PREVIEW Counselors must be available to assist with each PREVIEW. In addition, PREVIEW Counselors are expected to assist with the Freshman DEBUT program in late August. (PREVIEW dates will be provided during the interview process.)

**PREVIEW Counselors must possess an ability to understand others as well as to be flexible in many situations beyond what is expected under normal circumstances. Dependability and timeliness in work habits is another needed quality.

**Since the job is quite demanding of time and energy, it is preferred that students serving as PREVIEW Counselors not be enrolled in summer courses or have other part-time positions which would interfere with the orientation sessions; however, it is negotiable.
