Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
Hawaii Pacific University's Student Government Association is hosting its first ever Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event to highlight Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. The goal of presenting this event is to create a united gender movement that engages men and allows them to be a part of the solution to end sexualized violence. The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event asks men to literally walk one mile in womens shoes which is not an easy task. This act generates a unique and powerful public experience that educates individuals and communities about the causes of sexualized violence, connects individuals with community services available for recovery, and empowers everyone to further develop and implement these skills and knowledge interpersonally and politically. Sexualized violence does not just affect women; it affects the men who care about them, their families, their friends, their coworkers, and their communities. This event will be held on Wednesday, April 16th from 11:30am to 12:30pm on Upper Fort Street Mall with check in beginning at 10:30am. Interested students, staff, and faculty can register online. Men can register as participants and women can register as volunteers. Participants are highly encouraged to check in at 10:30am. Outside community organizations will be present to provide and share information about this important issue. The first 30 HPU students to register will have heels provided for them (sizes permitting) The first 50 HPU students will receive a Respect t-shirt FREE! Participants will be judged in the following ways and winners awarded an interview and feature in the HPU Kalamalama. o The individual who struts their stuff the best in the last stretch of the walk. o The group who is best represented through their support of the event and raising sexual assault awareness (i.e. many participants walking and supporting, holding signs raising awareness, wearing teal for sexual assault awareness month, etc.). Are you man enough?
